canvappen is a desktop app: download it on your computer.
Skia canvas with layers, components, libraries, variables and themes. Exports to PDF, PNG, JPEG, WEBP, SVG and HTML.
Claude Code reads, edits, validates and exports your designs with 14 tools, and you see its pointer move on the canvas.
The same commands as the MCP for scripts and CI: inspect, apply-operations, export, localize and more.
A Docker image with the CLI and the MCP for headless servers, with a network policy and strict mode.
canvappen is not signed by Apple or Microsoft yet, so the system asks for confirmation the first time. After that, updates install from inside the app.
Open canvappen-0.2.1-mac-universal.dmg and drag canvappen to Applications.
Open canvappen from Applications. macOS says it can't verify the developer: click OK.
In System Settings → Privacy & Security, click “Open Anyway”. You only do this once.
Run canvappen-0.2.1-windows-x64-setup.exe. It doesn't need administrator rights.
If “Windows protected your PC” appears, click More info → Run anyway.
canvappen installs for your user and opens when it finishes.
The first time you open canvappen, it offers to set itself up as an MCP server. You can also do it from Help → Configure MCP in Claude Code, or with this command.
Then type /mcp in Claude Code to check that canvappen is connected.
claude mcp add canvappen --scope user -- \
/Applications/canvappen.app/Contents/MacOS/canvappen --mcpclaude mcp add canvappen --scope user -- ^
"%LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\canvappen\canvappen.exe" --mcpThe CLI and the MCP are also published as a Docker image for Linux servers. It's free to use; the read-only registry access is in the guide.

canvappen works offline. The only connection it makes on its own is to our version API.
The app only asks canvappen.identity.pe whether there is a new version and downloads it. It sends the installed version and the operating system, nothing else.
The app has no accounts, telemetry or analytics. .pen files are read from and saved to your disk, and the MCP talks to the app over a local channel.
If a document uses fonts or images from the internet, canvappen asks before downloading them. You can turn off updates with CANVAPPEN_NO_UPDATES=1.

It opens JSON .pen files from versions 2.0 to 2.21 and saves them as 2.21. It keeps the properties it doesn't recognize, so the file stays compatible with other tools that use the format.
canvappen is tested with Claude Code. Its MCP server uses standard stdio, so other MCP clients should work, but we haven't tested them yet.
Yes. The app only connects to check for updates, and it downloads a document's remote fonts or images only if you allow it.
Yes. The Docker image includes the CLI and the MCP, and the Docker guide explains how to pull it.
